A Mystical Fragrance Free World

F
ragrance, itís everywhere! Whether itís your skincare products or your toilet cleaner, its full of chemicals including harmful fragrances. Nearly 13,000 chemicals are used in cosmetics and personal care products, but only ten percent have been tested for human safety.

Many cosmetics and personal care products on the market, advertise that they are fragrance-free and hypo-allergenic to increase their consumer base. Like many dermatologists, Dr. Steven Xu, a dermatologist at Northwestern University Hospital in the U.S, was asked almost daily about the moisturisers or sunscreen that would work best for sensitive skin.

One year ago, Xu lead an analysis of popular moisturisers from brands sold on Amazon, Target and Wallmart to test the advertised claims. They gathered 174 different moisturisers and found some surprising results. A staggering 45 percent of products advertised as fragrance free actually contained a fragrance and over 80 percent of those advertised as hypo-allergenic contained a potentially allergenic chemical.

Further studies performed by Dr. Matthew Zirwas and his team discovered from 276 moisturisers analysed, 68 percent contained fragrances, 62 percent contained parabens, 24 percent had benzyl alcohol and 20 percent contained propylene glycol and formaldehyde releasers.

The research concluded;

ĎMany ingredients of moisturisers have the potential to cause irritant and allergic contact dermatitis; therefore it is necessary for clinicians to be aware of such potential allergens in order to manage and advise their patients accordingly.í

Here at HomeScents, we donít live in some sort of mystical world of mis-advertised products. We declare all of our ingredients on our products. We are natural. We are vegan.
